A round-up of 2006
Posted on Saturday 30th December 2006
These are ubiquitous on websites at this time of year so here’s another. I won’t record any world events or current affairs as these can be found elsewhere ad nauseam. The BBC news website has a good one and I’m sure each of the TV channels will trot something out tomorrow night.
So in 2006 I ….
- …. stopped being a slob. Having not done any proper exercise for 4 years, in January I joined Regan at the gym. Although initially reluctant I have become a convert to the regular exercise clan and am (hopefully) a lot healthier for it.
- …. developed shin splints. Walking is one of those things you take for granted and when that ability is lost or impaired you realise how much. Fortunately my legs are almost back to normal, thanks to Gemma my physio.
- … finished my basic anaesthetic training. In the ordinary course of events I would have proceeded onto become a registrar and start the advanced training. However as I’m sure you’re all aware my life has taken a different course.
- …. got a job in Australia. Well if the NHS doesn’t want me so be it.
- …. become even more of a geek. I now run two websites, the other being the Leicester Anaesthetists site. Someone wise said: “The only difference between men and boys is that the toys become more expensive”.
- …. finally got round to seeing the Diwali fireworks. After 10 years of living in Leicester it was about time, so thanks to Leigh and Loz for taking us!
- …. became green-fingered. We had the paving bricks in the back garden pulled up and a nice garden laid out. Annoyingly I haven’t got any photos to prove how nice it looked last summer so you will have to take my word for it!
- …. drank Guinness at the factory. We visited Dublin in the summer and had to do the archetypal tourist thing of going to the Guinness factory. It is true that Guinness tastes better in Ireland, although after the 4th pint you stop caring.
In other news this year:
- 1 set of friends are expecting, 2 sets of friends are getting married, and another set of friends are doing both. The worst bit of we will miss all of the happy occasions, so we expect lots of photos!
- My grandmother turned 84, has lived in the same house for 50 years and is determined to keep going until she sees great-grandchildren. She will be waiting some time, unless one of my cousins gets careless!
- Regan made 15 business trips to 6 countries. That’s a lot of AirMiles.
- Regan also visited her parents in Adelaide, swam in the Dead Sea and threw ripe tomatoes at the EU building in Brussels (at my request ).
I hope you all had an interesting 2006. Please post some comments on what you got up to.
Best wishes for 2007

Dear Rick
