Gentlemen, start your engines

As a break to the drudgery of setting up house, we went to the Clipsal 500 today. Don’t worry if you haven’t heard about it, I hadn’t till I got here. It is the first round in the Australian V8 supercars racing championship. The competition is almost as big as NASCAR is in the States, or Formula 1 in the UK.

Regan’s Dad works in the advertising industry and knows people at Channel 7, a local network who were broadcasting the races, so managed to get us tickets to their corporate box. This got us a trackside “villa” with all the free food and drink we could swallow. In ordinary circumstances I would have jumped at a free bar and drunk a skinful. Instead none of us wanted to drink much alcohol as the temperature at the track nudged towards 40 degrees.
There was a lot going on – multiple rounds of races and qualifying sessions on the track, oggling grid girls in the paddock and the Aussie equivalents of the Red Arrows and an F-18 Hornet fly-by in the air. By late afternoon we’d both had enough of the heat and noise so called it a day.
