Not just another cop movie

If you haven’t seen it yet, I urge you to rush out and see Hot Fuzz.
We went to the cinema on Saturday night to see the eagerly awaited second film by the makers of the hysterical Shaun of the Dead. If you have seen Shaun of the Dead, you will find Hot Fuzz very funny. There are many in-jokes and countless unflattering references to almost every police movie ever made. The tirade of gags and jokes is almost non-stop and it makes the film very enjoyable. Our only criticism was that it is overly long and unnecessarily dwells on some of the themes. However I’d still highly recommend it if you like satirical comedies.
As a follow up to the Differences posting I’ve noticed a few more differences in the local vernacular. One example is a common greeting here is “How are you today?” or “How’s it going?”. Now the latter can be taken in the same context as the Britsh “Alright?”, in other words a rhetorical greeting. However if someone says “How are you today?” I assume they want an answer, whereas in practice the person doing the asking has usually lost attention before you have a chance to open your mouth. Another common throwaway comment is “Beautiful”. This seems to be used in the same way the French use “Alors”, i.e.: pretty much for anything! The urge to be a smart-arse and say something like “Why thank you for noticing!” is overwhelming.
We made another furniture buying trip today and made Ingvar Kamprad even richer. Regan’s office is starting to look far more like a workplace and less like a squat. We’re still a long way off making the place look how we want it, but are a lot closer than a month ago. With any luck our shipped posessions will arrive in time for Christmas and we can finally settle in properly – just in time to move out again!

Saw Hot Fuzz at the cinema the other week, it is excellent! Sam said she hadn’t seen me looking so cheerful in ages. Perhaps even better than Shaun Of The Dead…
