What a diff’rence a degree Celsius made

This time a more recognisable pop culture reference, as I have been informed that many of you have missed my Simpsons and Futurama quotes.
The worst of the summer is over and it has become a lot more pleasant lately. We’ve had some more drizzle which is keeping the lawn green. This is very welcome as we are on water restrictions and can only use hoses after 8pm. Unfortunately this is also when the midges and mozzies come out, and here they don’t just bite – they take chunks!
The drop in temperature has made working out far more bearable. I did the 10km rowing challenge again today and unlike last time, did reasonably well. I finished with good times, so it wasn’t slacking that made the row easy. It’s funny how temperature and humidity has such a strong influence on physical performance.
Some of my colleagues have been moaning about the change – they considered a pleasant 21°C day as cold! Unsurprisingly I reminded them that they didn’t know what they were talking about unless they had been to Glasgow in the middle of winter (and for reference, I have). 60 mile an hour winds and horizontal rain – that’s properly cold!
I’ve settled into work fully now, learnt all the idiosyncracies, and become one of the team on the ICU. Fortunately medicine is the same throughout the first world. People get sick in the same way, and the management is almost identical. This has made fitting in quite easy, especially since the nurses are grateful to work with a doctor who speaks English! I’ve applied for registration with the Intensive Care college here so I can get this post accredited for training. The consultants have said that I may only need to do another 2 -3 years before becoming eligible for specialist (i.e: consultant) status.
