Bicycle, bicycle …
Posted on Tuesday 8th May 2007
“I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike. I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride it where I like”. A little slice of poetry by the great Freddie Mercury this time.
Although we have been going to the gym reasonably regularly, my calorie output lately has not matched the output levels while at LFE. This may explain the couple of extra kilos I seem to have gained. To counter this I recently bought a bike with the intention of cycling to work and occasionally to the gym too.
It’s a 6km round trip to work, which should help burn a few calories and make up for those challenges I’m missing out on. I hope the dozy Adelaide drivers notice I’m there, but to help I have 3 LED lights and some reflective strips. At some point this week I’m getting a high-vis jacket just to make sure! While not in the same league as The Machine’s marathons to London, it should help improve my cardio fitness.
Another enticement is that the hospital administration have ended our free permit parking. From now on they are asking $11 a week (approx £5) just for the right to park – the space isn’t even guaranteed. I’m not paying, then finding I still have to park elsewhere – what a rip off. They are even charging motorcycle and scooter riders, but fortunately bikes are exempt … for the time being!

Dear Rick
Bike helmets are compulsory here.
If you are caught on the road without one, you can be fined.
Cheers
Vicki
Rick,
I also understand that tight, fluorescent shorts are also compulsory garb for the cyclist about town. Don Dunstan started the trend in the early 70′s by wearing a pink pair to Parliament, and now it has been enacted in statute.
