Not quite downtown Baghdad, but …

It would appear that this is not an innocent death, and drugs have been implicated. Therefore it is quite likely that the man died from an accidental overdose. If true that would not be surprising as the hospital is surrounded by some fairly deprived suburbs and illicit drug use seems to be a major problem here, as with any other city. Indeed while I was doing my last night on-call we had to admit a young girl to intensive care after suffering an adverse reaction to GHB. If I hear anything further when I’m next in, I’ll post again.
Despite what the media, especially that owned by Rupert Murdoch, would have us believe I think Adelaide is a safe city to live in. Most of the reported problems seem to be violence in the city centre on weekend nights and gang-on-gang murders related to the drug trade. This is hardly novel for a Westernised city and we tended to avoid the center of Leicester on a Friday night for precisely the same reasons. It is a shame when some people’s version of a good night out is 20 beers, a fight and winding up at the local Casualty unit or in a jail cell. Perhaps I am just a boring sod!

Regarding the last statement, maybe having 19 beers, watching a fight between two naked women in a pool of honey (ala Amber Lady on fox tv) and having casual(ity) sex with a local at the back of a jail cell would be a better night out Rick!
