Smile
Posted on Wednesday 11th July 2007
Anyway I digress. In the medical world a smile is a valuable tool. It puts patients at ease and makes you, as the doctor, seem more approachable. I know most of our patients are asleep, but I still have to talk to relatives on a daily basis. Most of you probably know that I have 2 crowns (on my Upper Right 1 and Upper Right 2). I acquired these after skateboarding, when the board stopped but I didn’t. One faceplant later and my smile was never the same again. The current crowns were done over 15 years ago, and even then, without much care and attention. As such one of them looks more like a peg tooth than mirroring it’s opposite.
Recently one of these crowns has started to disintegrate and expose the damaged tooth underneath. I had always intended to get the crowns replaced but ,with last year’s employment uncertainty and the move here, had been putting it off as long as possible. Now my hand has been forced and I must get it done sooner rather than later. As a legacy of the original injury I still have a cyst in my upper jaw so will also need an apicectomy. Since this means relatively invasive dental surgery, as you can probably imagine, I am not looking forward to it. To make things worse I will need a filling as a poorly executed dental sealant has allowed infection to get into one of my molars.
Hopefully in about 6 months I will have a restored and attractive smile again. Of course it’s going to cost, but it will give me self-confidence, so is worth the expense. It will also be an excuse to get some recompense from my medical insurer. I’m paying them enough each month, so feel entitled to a little quid pro quo. My dentist is a Greek chap called Spyros who is extremely professional and seems very knowledgable. Mick has been seeing him for years, so hopefully he will be able to work similar magic on my mouth. Once it’s all done I’ll show off his handiwork in pictorial format.

Best of luck with that!
Wish you were here- it’s three days to the wedding, better get on and write that speech!
dear oh dear - hope it’s not dental work under GA - the thought of nasal tubes and all that drilling would put the fear of God in me!
Best of luck
