The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth

Having moved to the Royal Adelaide Hospital has exposed me to some of the more newsworthy trauma patients in the state. All of the MVA, that’s code for car crash, victims, stabbings and shootings wind up on our unit. Just as an example, in just the past 2 days, the following shooting victim, trapped motorist and motorcyclist have become our patients.
The most striking aspect of these cases is how the local media blow these things out of proportion. While I can’t go into details for obvious reasons, injuries are routinely exaggerated and circumstances overstated. I know the media have papers to sell, and ratings to chase, but little accuracy would go a long way. The principle of “Don’t believe everything you read” has never seemed so apt.
