A promotion, well sort of
Posted on Friday 7th March 2008
Last week I was asked to take on one of the Senior Registrar posts. They managed to ask in such a way as not to actually give a choice, so it has become au fait d’accompli.
It is flattering that they considered me amongst my colleagues, but I suspect it was a case that they needed someone to fill the role rather than having intended to promote me regardless. It is a slightly strange arrangement, as from time to time I will be having to do shifts as a regular registrar when they have gaps on that rota. So it is more nominal than true advancement. To boot they have also warned me that I may be demoted to the regular registrar rota permanently from August anyway.
In a manner of speaking I would rather not have to step up at this point. I have only just arrived at the Royal Adelaide and am still getting used to the place, people and patients. There are many more challenges here just in terms of work type and intensity, and I’m yet to feel settled there.
However any means of rising through the ranks is worth taking. The added responsibility will look good on my CV when it comes to geting further jobs. There is also the principle of keeping current, and future, employers on-side and being obliging. Hopefully it will be remembered favourably when I next go to them with my begging cap for a new contract.

well were theres an opportunity you have to grab it
