Back in the air again

As you can guess from the title (following a common theme – just search this blog to see the other “Back in the” postings) I have been in today on another Retrieval shift.
It was another busy day with an early trip to Broken Hill, a small mining town over 500km from Adelaide, out in the middle of a desolate plain. We had to pick up an elderly lady with bowel perforation who really needed the support of a tertiary hospital. It meant a flight on the RFDS plane. It was a little turbulent today due to the hot, changing weather we’ve had today, but we still managed to deliver the patient back in good shape.
Then, this afternoon, we had to go to Mannum, a small town on the Murray River about 80km from Adelaide. Our patient was a young lady who had been bitten by a snake. In normal circumstances this would have been pretty serious so we rushed up to get her, but in retrospect we think she was bitten but not envenomated. On our arrival she was in reasonable shape, and tolerated the somewhat bumpy trip back with no problems. It was a opportunity for me to try a different part of our transport arsenal as we went in Rescue 52, a heavily modified BK117 helicopter.
All the rest of the photos from these trips can be found in the 2008 Retrievals Gallery.
