Turn that frown upside down
Posted on Sunday 25th January 2009
“That’s a smile, not an upside-down frown! Work on that, too!”. A slightly obscure reference but geeks in the know should get this one.
Regular readers of this blog will remember the epic saga that my crowns have become. A bad decision when I was 10 has cost me time and money ever since, culminating in finally getting a set of gnashers worthy of showing off last July. I was hoping that would have been the last time I had to sit in the dentist’s chair for some time.
So you can imagine the heartsink that I felt yesterday morning when one of my crowns snapped off. One minute all perfect tombstones the next a bad impression of Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel. This couldn’t have come at a worse time being right at the beginning of the Australia Day weekend, and just before I had to go to work. Fortunately I managed to wedge the crown in between it’s neighbours, so got away with it. Clearly this was an undesirably precarious situation as exemplified by having to search Ward Street late that night when it popped out of my mouth while I was cycling home.
Fortunately all is well again as Spyro, my dentist, came to the rescue, and gave up some of his holiday to fix my problem. As it turns out the break could have been a lot worse and the repair, while tricky, was well within his capabilities. The end result looks very good and you wouldn’t know that I almost wound up back to square one again. I am mindful though, that this is only a temporary measure and it may fail again at some point in the future. We may get, as Spyro put it, 5 days or 5 years before needing the definitive treatment – an implant. Obviously I’m sincerely hoping it’s the latter but right now am just relieved that all is well again in the dentition department.
Just in case you were wondering, there aren’t going to be any pictures!
