A little distracted lately
Posted on Saturday 28th February 2009
All has been rather quiet on here over the past few days. There is good reason, and I been busy and had my mind elsewhere.
You will remember that this year I am working towards Fellowship with the Australian Intensive Care college. From Wednesday to Friday this week I have been taking part in a preparatory course towards the exam.
These sort of course is always interesting, useful and disconcerting. They gave us some invaluable insights into how the exam works and some valuable tips ‘n’ tricks on how to give the best performance. We were also given practice on our communication skills and viva technique. While knowledge is obviously essential, there is also a degree of game playing. The candidate not only needs to know the answers but, more specifically, needs to accurately second guess exactly what facet of that answer the examiner is looking for. Therefore a certain aspect of pattern recognition is helpful, and the only way to get this is through repetition. The course provided those opportunities and gave us an idea of the expected standard for the actual exam.
Of course I had some mixed results with a few good vivas and some bombed. While a little undignifying, I am not too worried about letting myself down as it was useful to find those deficiencies now, with the luxury of the next 5 months for rectification. There is a lot of work to do but hopefully I can raise my game to the required level in time for the real deal.

aww…best of luck, fella…chexk the blog for latest shenanigans north of the equator!

keep plugging away Rick!
I hope you didn’t sulk for too long Rick. Keep looking for those deficiencies – it means you will BLITZ the real thing when it comes time… I too am a little distracted – but all to do with being home again.
Is rectification really a word? :0)
