How low will you go

No, we’re not “live from the KBBL party lot“.
From time to time, it is worth testing your boundaries. Not necessarily in terms of what you are willing to do, but more the limits of your comfort zone. In other words what makes you cringe, feel uncomfortable, or even cringe and have to look away.
Anyway, on with the post and to explain the reason behind such questions. Last night we went to the last night of the Adelaide Fringe Festival and saw the Secret Show at the Spielgeltent. It has routinely been one of the biggest draws of the festival and features a variety of the more outrageous and bizarre acts available.
The show started tamely enough with some rock ‘n’ roll era dancing, then it we had a succession of drag acts each more risque than the last. I was very impressed that 6 foot tall men could dance daintily and precisely on platform heels – surely a recipe for a twisted ankle. That was just the warm-up as the show took a turn for the leftfield with the bogan stripper. It was strange enough to see a man with straggly hair debag himself from boiler suit to lamé posing-pouch, but then as a finale he set fire to his pubic hair! The sight was shocking enough, but then the smell just made it too real! Then the last act was a very unusual vaudeville act called The Wet Spots. Let’s just say the subject matter of their songs was decidedly post-watershed. In fact their music was very funny while being just the right side of inappropriate.
So while we only made it to one show at the Fringe, it was certainly one of the most entertaining. And also a good opportunity to put a toe in the water and find out whether we truly are open-minded or not!
