The future is not set

There is no fate but what we make for ourselves. Ref here.
In August I will be going back to the Royal Adelaide ICU for another year. This posting will be very important as it will see me through (and hopefully passing) the fellowship exam. It will also provide time to complete my formal research project. By the end of the year, I hope I will have ticked all the boxes required to finish training and become a fellow.
After that my life and career had been a blank canvas. Today I think that may be no more. It all started innocuously as a casual chat with my boss about future options. In the course of conversation, he asked whether I was enjoying the current retrieval job and would I consider doing some more. Before I knew it, we had started talking about employment for next year. The (very much provisional) plan is to rejoin MedSTAR as a Retrieval Fellow. This would carry far more responsibility than being a registrar, and act as stepping-stone between that grade and consultant.
The post would initially be for one year but carries the option of renewal – technically indefinitely. Whilst in post there is the offer of completing a number of important courses which would qualify towards a Masters in Public Health. Such courses include Chemical and Biological Hazard Containment, Major Incident Medical Management and Support, Urban Search and Rescue and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support. Best of all would be getting trained how to drive Category 2 – with blue lights and sirens.
All of this is by no means certain and more negotiation will be required before I can confirm. It is also very much dependent on completing my current college requirements, but hopefully that won’t present any obstructions. So, all being well, my continued employment here in Australia is looking good for another year.

great news Rick – sounds like things are moving quickly and ever onwards and upwards! best wishes for everything!
HI Rick. Wow. All that sounds pretty full on. The next 18 months will see you pulling your hair out. I dont envy you. Good luck with your formal research project: you know where to find a super dooper proofer! As for MediFlight, I wish you well with that. A little of the green eyed monster is in residence! As for the Blue lights and sirens – WAAAY over rated, and a word from the wise : Dont EVER let a copper drive if you are in the back with a critical pt! man They will kill you with their excitement. Their dedication to getting someone somewhere fast for life saving management has left me feeling tachycardic on many occasions! But the other educational opportunities are brilliant. Too many to choose. Dont forget to make time in your schedule for some you time and some all important ” couple time” before the mind numbing task of exam cram sets in! All the best honey. Keep on keeping on! Catch you somewhere in our respective roles someday! Kx
